Blades that won’t cut,
Green that won’t grow,
A sun that won’t shine,
And a wind that won’t blow,
A yard full of memories,
Cut down to size –
All flash before my eyes.

A sweet and strong lady,
Back there in the grass,
The place I called home,
But just couldn’t last,
A cupboard for hope,
Filled with old coats and shoes–
Sometimes you win ’til you lose.

The grass will still be green,
Although my heart is torn in two,
The sun will keep on shining,
In spite of what I do,
These boots will stand and walk
Right out of this scene,
But when the lights come back on,
The grass will still be green.

A sparkling, bright city,
Folks run here and there,
No two in one place,
They just hang in the air,
Shiny new eyeholes,
And laces to boot –
An actor, worn by his suit.

Hidden, coiled, and lurking,
Envy waits to strike,
It raises up its fickle head,
And lunges at my heels.
I stagger, swerve and fall down:
Nothing’s what it seems –
Wounded by vanity and
Killed by my own dreams.

Eyes that don’t see,
And legs that don’t run,
A set that won’t be
Lit up like the sun,
Green patent leather,
Laced over the calf –
Faces that just look and laugh.
